The Roman ruler Numa (The second king of Rome) divided the craftsman into 9 guilds

  1. flute players
  2. goldsmiths
  3. copper smiths
  4. carpenters
  5. fullers
  6. dyers
  7. potters
  8. Cobblers (aka: shoemakers)
  9. Everything Else

Over time the different types of craftsmen increased and became more specialized. Putting more emphasis on the craft guilds.
